Gambian international Abubakr Barry has rejected an offer from an Eastern European club as he remains focused on securing a move to a higher level of football this summer, Footy-Africa can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder’s camp confirmed that the proposal was swiftly turned down, making it clear that the player’s ambitions lie elsewhere.

“It is not interesting. We told this club that we are not going to play there,” a source close to the player stated.

Barry’s future has become one of the most intriguing transfer stories involving Gambian players this summer, with clubs from England and Austria actively pursuing his signature.

A move to England, however, is proving complicated. Interested clubs Stoke City and Oxford United have encountered challenges related to the registration of foreign players, creating uncertainty around any potential transfer.

Oxford United, recently relegated to England’s League One, saw an offer worth more than €2 million rejected by Austria Vienna. The Austrian club are determined to secure the best possible deal for one of their most valuable assets.

Stoke City have since emerged with a stronger proposal, submitting a bid worth €3 million for the 25-year-old midfielder. The Championship side are hopeful of convincing Austria Vienna to part ways with the Gambian international, who is widely expected to leave the club before the close of the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Austrian giants RB Salzburg remain firmly in contention and are continuing negotiations with Austria Vienna. Salzburg are understood to be pushing hard to reach an agreement, while personal terms with Barry are not expected to present any significant obstacles should a transfer fee be agreed.

Barry joined Austria Vienna in July 2024 and has enjoyed a steady rise in Austrian football. His performances have attracted attention from clubs across Europe, while his international profile continues to grow with The Gambia, for whom he has earned nine senior caps.

With a contract running until 2027 and a market value estimated at €2.5 million according to Transfermarkt, Austria Vienna remain in a strong negotiating position. Nevertheless, Barry’s previously expressed desire to take the next major step in his career suggests that a summer departure remains the most likely outcome.
