Former Ghana international Anthony Yeboah in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has expressed confidence that the Black Stars will begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a victory over Panama when the two sides meet in their Group L opener at Toronto Stadium in Canada on Thursday.

The legendary striker believes Ghana have the quality and experience required to overcome the Central Americans and collect three crucial points before facing sterner tests later in the group.

“The first game is always very important in a tournament like the World Cup because it sets the tone for everything that follows,” Yeboah told Footy-Africa.

“I respect Panama because every team that qualifies for the World Cup deserves to be there, but I believe Ghana have the players, the talent and the character to win this match. The players know what is at stake and I expect them to start strongly.”

Ghana find themselves in a challenging Group L alongside European heavyweights England and Croatia, making a positive result in the opening fixture even more significant.

“When you look at the group, it is clear that every point will matter. England and Croatia are very strong teams with a lot of quality and experience at this level, so Ghana cannot afford to leave anything behind against Panama,” he added.

“Winning the first match would give the team confidence and put them in a much better position heading into the next games. It would also take some pressure off the players before they face two of the strongest teams in the competition.”

The former Leeds United striker also urged the Black Stars to remain focused and avoid underestimating their opponents despite being considered favourites.

“Football has changed and there are no easy matches at the World Cup. Ghana must approach Panama with the right mentality, work hard and stay disciplined throughout the game,” Yeboah continued.

“If they show the hunger and determination that Ghanaian teams are known for, I am confident they can get the victory. After that, they can focus on the bigger challenges against Croatia and England, but the priority now must be securing three points in the opening match.”
