Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has delivered a bold statement of intent ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the Black Stars are travelling to the tournament with ambitions that extend far beyond participation.

Addressing players, technical staff, and officials during a farewell dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday evening, Okraku expressed unwavering confidence in Ghana’s ability to compete with the elite nations gathered for the global showpiece.

The GFA boss stressed that the national team must approach the tournament with a winning mentality, emphasizing that Ghana’s objective is to challenge for football’s most coveted trophy rather than merely make an appearance on the world stage.

“We strongly believe in this team, and we know that we are not here to be counted among the numbers but to compete and fight for the title,” Okraku said.

With expectations tempered by the Black Stars’ recent performances at major tournaments, Okraku acknowledged the scepticism surrounding the team but made it clear he remains firmly convinced that this squad can exceed expectations.

The football administrator called for belief and unity, arguing that Ghana possesses the quality and determination required to make a significant impact during the competition.

“This is our time to shine. The stakes are high. A lot of people don’t believe, but I do. I feel energised and very upbeat about our chances in this tournament. We are Ghana, and we shall conquer.”

Ghana enter the World Cup seeking their first appearance in the knockout rounds since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. Standing in their way is a demanding Group L assignment featuring Panama, England, and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before facing one of the tournament favourites, England, at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their group-stage journey will conclude with a crucial encounter against Croatia on June 27.

The team has already settled in Rhode Island, which will serve as their training and accommodation base throughout the tournament as preparations intensify for the opening fixture.
