Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has strongly criticized Atalanta over their handling of compatriot Ademola Lookman and his future, describing the situation as “deeply unfair.”

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward was heavily linked with a summer switch to Inter Milan, who reportedly tabled a €45 million offer. Atalanta, however, refused to sanction the move, standing firm on their €50 million valuation.

‘If he performs well, there will be interest from other clubs’: Gambo on Lookman

Yobo, speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, revealed his disappointment at how the Italian club has treated Lookman despite his immense contributions over the past three seasons.

“Ademola gave Atalanta everything. Goals, assists, trophies, and consistency. The least the club could do was to respect his wishes when a fair offer came in,” Yobo said. “Instead, they’ve blocked his dream move and left him in limbo. That’s not how you treat a player who carried your team.”

Lookman, who scored 20 goals and registered six assists in 40 appearances last season, has astonishingly not featured in a single game this campaign. Reports suggest he has been absent from training sessions for weeks.

“For me, this is unacceptable,” Yobo added. “Every player has a career span, and when the time comes to move on, clubs must show understanding. Ademola has earned that. Atalanta’s stance is unfair and doesn’t reflect well on their reputation. Instead of letting him rot on the side, they should be engaging him with understanding

Since joining the Bergamo side, Lookman has racked up 52 goals and 21 assists in 118 matches, cementing his status as one of Serie A’s most influential forwards.

Yet, with his future still uncertain, Nigeria fans are now hoping the situation does not affect his form as he rejoins the national team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
