Swedish forward Emil Forsberg has told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview that he is proud of the development of Ghanaian duo Ronald Donkor and Mohammed Sofo at New York Red Bulls.
Forsberg praised the midfielders for their hard work and progress this year after they helped the MLS side secure a 2-0 victory over Inter Miami at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, on Saturday.
The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the seventh minute through a Casemiro own goal after Sofo played a through ball into the box for Cade Cowell.
Donkor then played a key role in sealing the victory, winning possession in Miami’s defensive third before setting up Cameron Harper, who crossed for Forsberg to score in the first minute of stoppage time.
Forsberg, who came off the bench to score the second goal, said both Ghanaian players had made significant progress through their commitment to improving every day.
“Very happy. I think they developed very big this year. Very proud of them. I think both of them are working very hard to get better every day, so I’m very happy,” he said.
The Swedish international was also delighted to see Donkor receive his first call-up to the Ghana national team during the September international window.
“I was very happy when Ronald also got the call from Ghana,” Forsberg added.
He urged both players to remain focused, humble and committed to their development as they look to reach greater heights in their careers.
“So I think they just have to keep going, keep working hard, stay humble, and they will do big things,” he said.
Donkor has made 28 appearances for New York Red Bulls this season, while Sofo has featured 24 times, underlining their growing involvement in the first team.
The victory was an important boost for the Red Bulls as they continue their push for a playoff place.
