Former Nigerian international Garba Lawal during an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa believes the surge of Super Eagles stars competing in the latter stages of European competitions is a massive boost for the national team’s profile.

Lawal was speaking following Nottingham Forest’s hard-fought victory over FC Porto in the Europa League quarter-finals, a tie that featured a heavy Nigerian presence on both sides.

Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi helped the Premier League outfit secure their spot in the final four, overcoming a Porto side that featured defender Zaidu Sanusi and striker Terem Moffi.

”It was a very good game and, of course, that adds more value for our players to play at the highest level,” Lawal exclusively told Footy-Africa. “It increases their transfer value and experience. I’m happy to see them playing well at their various club sides, which is fantastic for their profile and for our national team too.”

Sanusi’s fitness concerns

While Forest celebrated, Porto’s exit left questions regarding the performance of left-back Zaidu Sanusi. Lawal, who earned 57 caps for Nigeria, suggested that the defender might be playing through the pain barrier.

”I watched the first leg the other day; he was fantastic when he played the first game. I think yesterday he was wonderful too,” Lawal noted.

”However, when you see Zaidu not performing at his best, I believe he has some minor injury. That is my assessment of him. Whenever I don’t see him giving 100%, I suspect the boy has a small injury. When he is 100% fit, he is something else. He’s fantastic.”

“These rewards feel phenomenal.”

English semifinal

The victory sets up a tantalizing semi-final clash between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. With the familiarity of Premier League rivals meeting on the continental stage, Lawal expects a tactical battle of attrition, but backs Forest to go through.

”They know each other. They play in the same league, they know the same players, the same environment, and the same fans,” Lawal said.

”It’s going to be very, very tough because of that familiarity. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so expect a very difficult contest, but I’m backing Forest to win.”
