Former Asante Kotoko defender Habib Mohammed Mo has officially completed a loan move to Iraqi Stars League side Al Naft FC, describing the transfer as a major step forward in his career.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa after completing the transfer on Wednesday, the Ghanaian defender expressed his excitement and gratitude.
“My target was to play in the Stars League in Iraq after first joining Al-Hashd, and God has been so good,” he said. “I worked very hard, playing 17 league games, two cup games, and even scoring a goal. A lot of clubs were in the race, but Al Naft FC presented the best offer.”
Habib revealed that his decision was also influenced by the club’s structure and potential:
“I did my research on Al Naft, and I feel they will help my career growth. They have great potential, good facilities, quality players, and a very professional environment. The club is well developed, and that is important for a player at this stage of his career.”
The experienced defender is focused on making an immediate impact, both individually and collectively, as Al Naft push to achieve their season objectives:
“I’m here to help them reach their target because every team sets objectives before the season starts. I want to do well for myself, for my family, enjoy my football, and also put the name Ghana in a position where Ghanaian players here are recognized as quality professionals.”

Habib confirmed that while the current deal runs until the end of the season, there is a clear pathway for a longer stay:
“I’m going to stay here until the end of the season, with an option to renew for two years if everything goes well and both sides agree.”
Despite continuing his journey abroad, the former Kotoko man insists his bond with Ghana remains strong.
“Ghana is my home, and it is always a pleasure to be home. Definitely, one day I will return home, inshallah,” he concluded.
The 28-year-old centre-back joins Al Naft from Iraqi second-tier outfit Al-Hashd, where his impressive performances sparked interest from several top-flight clubs. Al Naft, who currently sit 12th in the Iraqi top division, moved decisively to secure his services until the end of the season, with an option to extend the deal further.
Habib, who previously featured for Kotoko, Ashanti Gold and Dreams FC in Ghana, was keen to test himself at a higher level after settling into Iraqi football, and believes the move aligns perfectly with his long-term ambitions.
Mohammed made five appearances for Ghana’s U23 national team and four more appearances for the Black Galaxies, Ghana’s senior team made up of local league players
