Ademola Lookman (€40m to Atletico Madrid, 2026)

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman recently completed a €40 million move from Italian side Atalanta to Atletico Madrid during the 2026 winter transfer window, placing him as the most expensive African transfer in the history of the Spanish La Liga.

The 28-year-old had long been linked with a move to the club, before finally getting his move which will see the Spanish giants pay a fixed €35 million fee and an additional €5 million in add-ons.

The Nigerian forward has settled in quickly in Spain, scoring four times and providing three assists from just seven appearances for Atletico.

Samuel Eto’o (€27m to Barcelona, 2004)

Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o completed a €27 million move to Barcelona in 2004 after impressing at Mallorca. He became one of the most expensive African footballers as at the time and still remains the club’s most expensive departure in history.

Despite attracting interest from Real Madrid, the four-time African footballer of the year went on to join Barcelona, where he won eight trophies in a very successful spell before leaving in 2009.

Umar Sadiq (€26m to Real Sociedad, 2022)

Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq ranks as the third-most expensive African player in La Liga history following his move from second division side Almeria to Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022 in a deal worrh up to €26 million. The deal includes a fixed €20 million and €6 million in add-ons and is a club-record transfer fee for Real Sociedad.

The 29-year-old had enjoyed an impressive campaign at Almeria during the 2021-22 season. However, his career at Real Sociedad was short-lived as he never recovered from an ACL injury he suffered few days after making a goalscoring debut for the club.

He has since left and joined Valencia on an initial loan deal, before moving permanently.

Youssef En-Nesyri (€20m to Sevilla, 2020)

Moroccan striker Youssef En-Nesyri joined Sevilla in a deal worth up to €20 million in 2020 after an impressive stint at Leganes, which ranks him as the fourth-most expensive African footballer in La Liga history.

En-Nesyri went on to spend four years at the club and won two UEFA Europa League titles before joining Fenerbahce in 2024.

Alexandre Song (€19m to Barcelona, 2012)

Completing this list is Cameroon legend Alex Song, who left Arsenal after seven years to join Barcelona in a deal worth about €19 million in 2012.

However, the move did not work out as hoped. Song struggled to adapt to the new league and returned to the English Premier League twice on loan to West Ham United, before leaving the Spanish giants finally in 2016.
