Ghanaian midfield gem, who is of English descent, Yussif Owusu penned down his first ever professional contract at Brighton & Hove Albion, getting rewarded for his impressive performances last season with the youth level U-21 team.
The youngster put pen to paper on a long-term five-year employment contract with The Seagulls, that will run at least until the end of the 2030 season. The 19-year-old has been with the club since his earlier juvenile years, playing through their U15, U18 and U21 sides.
Upon landing the maiden professional contract, in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, Owusu immediately indicated his intent to continue his development, with the focus on making it to the senior team in the forthcoming 2025/26 campaign.
โI’m over the moon, because my dream has eventually come true,โ he said before adding: โI’ve always longed and worked hard for this, and I couldn’t be happier. But again, I also realize I’m not close to where I want to be with the club, that has become my life-long family.โ
โI want to play with the big guys, and that’s the target next season. I don’t want it to come as a gift, because those don’t exist in football. I want it to come because I worked hard for it, and that’s where I see myself next season – to break into the senior team,โ the midfielder added. โIt’s every young player’s dream, when you eventually make your debut with the seniors, it’s a privilege that comes with immense hard work, commitment and dedication. When my time comes, I’ll take it with open hands. For now, I’ll keep the work and the sacrifices,โ the Ghanaian concluded.
Last season with Brighton’s U21 team, the defensive midfielder, dubbed to be the next Carlos Baleba, played 20 matches, and chipped in with a goal. That came after 26 appearances with the U18s in the preceding two campaigns.
