Former Nigeria U-20 forward Ahmed Abdullahi is expected to join another club on loan before the start of the new season, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, the source has exclusively confirmed that a loan move is in the works and that Abdullahi is expected to spend next season elsewhere.
“Last season was a difficult one for Ahmed because he had to battle a number of injuries, which limited his time on the pitch,” the source said. “From what I know, he will definitely go out on loan so he can continue working on his fitness and, more importantly, play regular first-team football. He is fit now and doing well, but he needs consistent game time.
“As you know, competition for places at Sunderland is very high. To build his confidence and continue his development, he needs to be playing regularly, and I don’t think he’ll get enough opportunities with the first team next season. I believe Belgium is the most likely destination because he has played there before and is well known. During the last transfer window, there was a possibility of a move to France, but that didn’t materialise.”
“This summer, I expect him to move, with Belgium the most likely destination. Club Brugge and Genk are among the clubs showing interest. Genk appear to be the frontrunners because they have a strong track record with Nigerian players. Abdullahi also has a similar physique and style of play to Tolu Arokodare, who has done well there. There is still plenty of time left in the transfer window, so we’ll have to wait and see,” the source added.
The 22-year-old Sunderland striker has endured an injury-hit spell since joining the English club from KAA Gent last year, with fitness setbacks slowing his integration into the first team.
Despite his injury struggles, Abdullahi showcased his quality for Sunderland’s U21 side, scoring six goals in seven appearances across the Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup.
The forward also trained regularly with the senior team but did not make a competitive appearance. With the new season approaching, Sunderland’s hierarchy believe a loan move will provide him with the regular first-team football needed to continue his development.
Abdullahi remains under contract with Sunderland until the summer of 2028.
