Werder Bremen vs Freiburg Match Preview

Werder Bremen are hoping to improve on their eight-place finish in the 2024/25 season with an improved performance in the new season. They recorded their first victory and clean sheet of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season in last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing of Borussia Monchengladbach. Samuel Mbangula, Jens Stage, Romano Schmid and Justin Njimah were on the scoresheet to seal the comfortable win.

They began the season with a 4-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, before overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in their second league match.

Freiburg, meanwhile, finished fifth in the 2024/26 Bundesliga season, earning them a place in this season’s UEFA Europa League. However, they have began the season in disappointing fashion and only recorded their first win in three matches in the last match-day.

They produced a stunning comeback, scoring three times in the final 10 minutes of the match to defeat Stuttgart 3-1. Breisgau-Brasiliianer had earlier suffered a 3-1 defeat to Ausburg in their opening match, which was followed another 4-1 defeat to FC Koln in their second match.

  • 26.08.2023 – Freiburg 1-0 Werder Bremen
  • 16.04.2023 – Werder Bremen 1-2 Freiburg

Freiburg have dominated this matchup in recent outings, claiming victories in four of their last five meetings. They have also lost just once in their last five visits to the Weser Stadium, winning twice and recording two draws.

Recent Form: Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen had failed to win in eight matches until their win over Stuttgart this past weekend. They also suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to lower division side Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB-Pokal first round last month.

However, Die Werderaner are unbeaten in their last five matches at home in the league, winning twice and recording three stalemates, while keeping four clean sheets in that run.

Recent Form: Freiburg

Freiburg have been inconsistent in their last three matches, but have only lost three times in their last 10 matches in all competitions.

They have an impressive away record, with their 4-1 defeat to FC Koln on match-day two their only away loss in the Bundesliga in their last eight trips.

Player to Watch: Victor Boniface (Werder Bremen)

Nigerian forward Victor Boniface showed glimpses of his quality with a superb assist a few minutes after coming on in the win over Monchengladbach.

A previous winner of the league title, his experience and powerful presence on the pitch adds a crucial edge to Werder Bremen’s attack.

Prediction

Freiburg have held the upper hand in recent meetings between both teams, and their strong record at Werder Bremen’s home ground gives them the edge in this matchup.
