Ghana begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a high-stakes clash against Panama on June 17, as both nations target what could be their most realistic opportunity to secure points in a challenging Group L that also features England and Croatia.

The encounter marks the first-ever meeting between the two countries on the international stage, adding another layer of intrigue to a fixture that could significantly shape the group standings.

The Black Stars arrive at the tournament carrying several concerns. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has been forced to navigate a series of setbacks, with key figures missing from the squad. Creative talisman Mohammed Kudus is sidelined through injury, defender Mohammed Salisu is unavailable after suffering a serious knee problem, while Thomas Partey will miss the match after being denied entry into Canada.

Those absences strip Ghana of much of their core spine, placing additional responsibility on the team’s attacking unit.

Despite the setbacks, Ghana still possess considerable firepower in the final third. Antoine Semenyo, Inaki Williams and Jordan Ayew provide pace, experience and goal threat capable of unsettling Panama’s defence. However, the challenge lies in creating chances consistently without Partey’s midfield control and Kudus’ creativity. As a result, Ghana may need to lean on quick transitions, dead-ball situations and moments of individual brilliance to break through.

Panama, meanwhile, are expected to stick to the disciplined approach that has served them well under Thomas Christiansen. Rather than seeking to dominate possession, Los Canaleros are likely to focus on defensive organisation and compactness.

Operating in a back-five system, Panama rely heavily on the energy of wing-backs Amir Murillo and Eric Davis, while veteran midfielder Anibal Godoy remains the team’s stabilising presence in the centre of the park. There is also cautious optimism surrounding playmaker Adalberto Carrasquilla, who has returned to training this week and could feature despite recent fitness concerns.

On paper, Ghana boast the superior individual quality, but preparations for the tournament have been far from ideal. The absence of several influential players has disrupted continuity and leaves the Black Stars with little margin for error in a fixture they can scarcely afford to lose.

With greater attacking quality and experience in key areas, Ghana may have just enough to overcome a resilient Panama side. Expect a tightly contested battle, but the Black Stars are tipped to narrowly secure all three points.

Antoine Semenyo will be Ghana’s biggest attacking weapon heading into the contest. The Manchester City forward enjoyed a remarkable season, registering 20 goals and six assists, and enters the World Cup carrying the hopes of a nation.

The 34-cap international has the pace, power and finishing ability to decide the game in a single moment.
