Nigerian prospect Meelubari Godwin is on the verge of joining Spanish Segunda División side Real Oviedo for an undisclosed fee, Footy-Africa can exclusively report.
The player and his representatives departed Lagos on Thursday for Spain to finalize his first professional contract after an agreement was reached with his parent club, Ajuwa Academy.
Godwin has spent the current season in the Nigeria National League (NNL) with Inter Lagos, where he attracted significant attention following a string of impressive performances.
A source close to the transfer confirmed to Footy-Africa that the move is the culmination of a long-term plan initiated during the previous European summer.
“The player had a trial with Real Oviedo last summer, and that was when the deal was agreed,” the source disclosed. “But he was asked to return home until every detail had been finalized. So he spent the six months on loan with Inter Lagos in the NNL just to gain professional experience.”
The source further clarified the nature of the agreement, noting that Inter Lagos’ involvement was purely developmental.
“His short contract with Inter Lagos ended a few weeks ago, and it was an outright sale, with Inter Lagos having no percentage in the deal,” the source added.
The young talent is expected to sign his contract upon arrival in Oviedo, where he will initially join the club’s youth setup to continue his development within the Spanish league system.
