Despite reports linking Nigerian international midfielder Joe Aribo with a move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, there has been no contact between the German club and Southampton, exclusive sources have disclosed to Footy-Africa.
Throughout the past week, rumours circulated that the experienced and versatile midfielder had caught the attention of Leipzig, with the club reportedly preparing a €10 million bid to sign him from St. Mary’s Stadium.
However, an exclusive source close to the 28-year-old’s agency, Elite Project Group Limited, told Footy-Africa that there has been no approach from Leipzig. In a twist, the source revealed that Aribo would be open to a move—provided the Bundesliga club reached an agreement with Southampton. Notably, his current contract runs until June 2026.
“We’ve seen the reports, but that’s all we know at the moment. We are not aware of any bid or talks with Leipzig, and we would be among the first to know if they had contacted Southampton. He’s entering his final year there, so we’re monitoring all developments. Joe [Aribo] is a fantastic player and wants to play at the top level, so he would certainly listen if Leipzig came in, but as of now, there are no negotiations,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.
Aribo was one of Southampton’s standout players during the just-concluded campaign, despite the club’s relegation to the EFL Championship. The central midfielder featured in 37 matches across the Premier League, EFL Cup, and FA Cup, contributing three goals.
Since making his Southampton debut in the 2022/23 season, Aribo has made 101 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals. He joined the club from Scottish giants Rangers FC, where he spent three seasons. Prior to that, he played for Charlton Athletic and Staines Town FC.
On the international stage, Aribo—whose Transfermarkt valuation is currently estimated at €6 million—has earned 33 caps for Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, scoring two goals and providing two assists since his debut in 2019.
