Turkish delight: How Onuachu found his ‘fit’ after Southampton struggle

Nigeria striker Paul Onuachu says his goal-scoring resurgence in Turkey is down to “tactical fit” rather than the quality of the league, following a frustrating spell in England with Southampton.

The 31-year-old has been in sensational form for Trabzonspor this season, a far cry from the difficult 18-month period he endured at St Mary’s where goals were scarce and starts were limited.

Speaking from the Nigeria camp in Fes ahead of AFCON 2025, the forward dismissed suggestions that his success is simply due to playing in a “easier” division.

“It’s not about the league,” Onuachu told Soccernet.ng. “I think it’s about the way the team wants to play, how you fit into the team, your confidence and everything around it.”

“Whether it’s the UK, Spain or Germany, if you fit into the team and suit the coach’s style of play, that’s what really matters.”

The ‘Southampton struggle’

Onuachu arrived at Southampton in January 2023 for a reported £18m, carrying a massive reputation after scoring 85 goals in 134 games for Belgian side Genk.

However, his time in the Premier League and subsequently the Championship was marked by a tactical mismatch. While Onuachu thrives on crosses and sustained pressure in the final third, a struggling Saints side often left him isolated.

“The more you feel trusted and understood, the better you express yourself,” Onuachu added, hinting at the lack of consistency he felt during his time on the south coast.

Return of the ‘Giant’

Since his move to Turkey, the 6ft 7in striker has looked like a player reborn. His physical presence and dominance in the air have made him the focal point of a Trabzonspor side that prioritizes his strengths.

  • Goals this season: 11 in the Süper Lig.
  • Key strength: Aerial duels won (ranks among the highest in Europe).
  • National team: Recalled to the Super Eagles for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.

His 11 goals prior to the international break have not only kept Trabzonspor in the hunt for European qualification but also forced his way back into Augustine Eguavoen’s Nigeria plans.

What’s next for Onuachu?

The striker is expected to lead the line for Nigeria as they look to go one step further at AFCON 2025 than their runners-up finish in 2023.

Once the tournament concludes, he will return to Trabzon to spearhead their push for the Turkish Cup and a top-three finish.
