African countries have continued to produce some of the world’s best defenders, with many of them making a name for themselves in Europe and on the international stage through their performances for both club and country.
Their impressive displays have also earned them big moves to some of the biggest clubs in the world, while their market values have continued to rise over the years.
Here are the top five most valuable African defenders in the world according to the latest Transfermarkt values.
Achraf Hakimi (€80 million)
African footballer of the year Achraf Hakimi ranks as the most valuable African defender in the world with a market value of around €80 million. The 27-year-old is also joint-second on the most valuable African footballers list, alongside countryman Ayyoub Bouaddi and Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo.
Hakimi has enjoyed a steady rise in his career and has developed into one of the best in his position over the last few years, helping French side PSG to consecutive triumphs in the UEFA Champions League.
The former Inter Milan right-back also played a very big role in Morocco’s AFCON 2025 campaign, as they were eventually awarded the title after a CAF ruling annulled Senegal’s win in the final.

Ousmane Diomande (€40 million)
Up next is Ivorian defender Ousmane Diomande, who is valued at €40 million and ranks as the second most valuable African defender in the world.
The 22-year-old has enhoyed a remarkable rise in his career, which has also seen him join the growing list of African footballers in the English Premier League.
Diomande joined Nottingham Forest during the summer window from Portuguese side Sporting CP and he is gradually beginning to establish himself at the English side.

Rayan Ait-Nouri (€40 million)
Manchester City and Algerian left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is also valued at €40 million and is ranked joint-second on this list.
The 25-year-old represented France at youth level, before going on to play for Algeria, making his debut in 2023.
Ait-Nouri has since been an integral player for the North African country and has also enjoyed a steady rise at club level, moving from Wolves to Manchester City in 2025.

Evan Ndicka (€35 million)
Another Ivorian defender to make this list, AS Roma centre-back Evan Ndicka comes in at fourth with a market value of around €35 million.
The 27-year-old joined the Italian club in 2023 and has been rated as one of Serie A’s best defenders since then.
Ndicka played for France at youth level before going on to represent Ivory Coast and was part of the squad that beat Nigeria to win the 2023 AFCON tournament. He has also been named in the EA Sports FC Serie A Team of the season for the last two seasons.

Edmond Tapsoba (€35 million)
Burkinabe and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba completes this list with a market value estimated to be around €35 million.
The 27-year-old has developed into one of Bundesliga and Africa’s best defenders since moving to Bayer Leverkusen from Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2020.
Since then, he has helped the club to three titles and was also named in the AFCON team of the tournament in 2021 after an impressive outing.
