Senegal vs Egypt Match Preview

Senegal head into the clash in very impressive form and on the back of a dominant 1-0 win over Mali in the quarterfinals. The 2021 champions took control of the game from start to finish against their opponents who were reduced to 10 in the first half.

The Lions of Teranga had previously beaten Sudan 3-1 in their Round of 16 clash, which followed a very impressive group stage campaign when they finished top of Group D with seven points from their three matches. Papa Thiaw’s side will be hoping for another repeat of the 2021 AFCON final, when they beat Egypt on penalty shootout to win their first-ever title.

Meanwhile record holders Egypt, head into the clash on the back of a very impressive outing in their last match when they ousted defending champions Ivory Coast 3-2 in their own quarterfinal clash.

Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah both scored in that encounter, which marked the second time both superstars scored in the same game in Morocco so far. The Pharaohs finished top of Group B and then went on to defeat Benin Republic 3-1 after extra-time in their Round of 16 encounter.

Senegal have dominated recent meetings between these two African countries and are unbeaten in their last five matches against Egypt, including the famous penalty shootout win in the 2021 final.

Recent Form: Senegal

Senegal have been in remarkable form so far in Morocco, winning four of their five matches in normal time, including the last three.

The Lions of Teranga have kept two clean sheets so far at the tournament and have only conceded two goals in the five matches. They have also scored three goals in a single game in three of their matches and have scored the second most goals at the tournament (11).

Recent Form: Egypt

Egypt have also been very impressive at the 2025 AFCON and they have recorded victories in four of their five matches, although they went through extra-time to see off Benin Republic in the Round of 16.

The AFCON record winners have scored three times in back-to-back matches, after managing only three across their first three games of the tournament.

Player to Watch: Mohamed Salah (Egypt)

The Egyptian superstar has already scored four times in Morocco – the second-highest number at the tournament alongside Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen.

Mohamed Salah could cause havoc against the Senegalese backline with his pace.
