Celta Vigo vs Athletic Bilbao Match Preview

Celta Vigo head into the clash on the back of an impressive away performance at the Santiago Bernabeu, recording a 2-0 win over Real Madrid, who were reduced to nine men in the clash.

The Sky Blues moved to 10th with the win, having amassed 19 points from their opening 15 matches, with four wins, seven draws and four defeats so far.

Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand, recorded a massive three points in their previous outing, defeating the title-chasing Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the San Mames. They moved up to seventh on the standings after an underwhelming start to the campaign, with 23 points so far from their opening 16 matches.

The Basque club have won seven of their games, recording two draws and seven defeats already.

Head-to-Head Record (Last five meetings)

  • 19.01.2025 – Celta Vigo 1-2 Athletic Bilbao
  • 22.09.2024 – Athletic Bilbao 3-1 Celta Vigo
  • 15.05.2024 – Celta Vigo 2-1 Athletic Bilbao
  • 10.11.2023 – Athletic Bilbao 4-3 Celta Vigo
  • 20.05.2023 – Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Celta Vigo

Athletic Bilbao have dominated this matchup recently, winning four of the last five meetings between these sides, while Celta Vigo have won only once during this period.

The Sky Blues have also won two of the last three meetings with Bilbao at home, although the Basque side claimed all three points in the last clash.

Recent Form: Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo have been poor in recent outings, although they recorded a shock 2-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in their last match.

The Sky Blues also recorded back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season, having drawn in 90 minutes against Sant Andreu in the Copa del Rey, before the win over Los Blancos last weekend.

Recent Form: Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao have been very inconsistent in recent matches, winning only three of their lat six games in all competitions.

The Basque side have won just twice on the road this season, but will be confident after recording a 2-0 win over Levante in their last away match.

Player to Watch: Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao)

Athletic Bilbao captain Inaki Williams has missed the club’s last seven league matches with an adductor injury, but could be set for a return in the clash against Celta Vigo.

The Ghanaian forward’s pace and work-rate could prove important if his side are to record a favorable outcome from the clash.
