Gambian rising star Albert Ajua Gomez has officially completed a move to Turkish Super Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir, signing a three-year permanent contract from Falcons Football Club. The 19-year-old defender, widely regarded as one of The Gambia’s brightest young talents, has been on the radar of several European clubs before sealing his move to Turkey.
Gomez’s manager, Ebrima Sohna, who has played a key role in nurturing the youngster’s career, in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa shared the story behind the transfer and his admiration for the player’s development.
“He was a player I noticed from the first time I watched him in the local leagues; I said to myself, ‘We have this type of player here—young and intelligent in defence like this?’ That was the moment I started tracking him,” Sohna revealed.
“I kept him in the league for many games to help him mature, and when I felt he was ready, I started discussing opportunities with my partners. We had a few clubs showing interest, but when Istanbul Basaksehir came in, their project really stood out. He travelled for trials right after The Gambia’s CHAN qualifier against Algeria in Algiers,” he added in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa.
Sohna went on to explain that the decision to finalise the move came after an impressive trial period.
“After three weeks, the club was convinced he would fit perfectly. He returned home for a short time, and once negotiations were completed, we signed the deal. I have great respect for Albert—he’s a special talent who I believe can go even further, possibly playing in the top European leagues beyond Turkey,” Sohna noted.
Determined and intelligent defender
Lamin Sanneh, former head coach of Gomez at Falcons FC, also expressed his delight at the youngster’s breakthrough. Sanneh coached Gomez for two seasons and witnessed his growth firsthand.
“It’s a great feeling seeing Gomez transfer from Falcons to Istanbul because he has truly worked for it. He is a very determined player, both on and off the field,” Sanneh said proudly.
“He has all the attributes of a modern-day centre-back—he reads the game exceptionally well, moves the ball confidently out of defence, and remains composed under pressure. We are certain he will continue to develop into a great defender in the years ahead.”
Sanneh further emphasized Gomez’s reliability and professionalism:
“Albert is very reliable in his role and responsibilities. He’s a great team player. For us at Falcons, it’s not a surprise to see such opportunities come his way.”
Promising Future
With his combination of tactical awareness, composure, and leadership qualities beyond his age, Albert Ajua Gomez’s move to Istanbul Basaksehir marks an exciting new chapter in his young career.
For Gambian football fans, it’s another proud moment as one of their own takes the next big step on the European stage.
