Ghanaian midfielder Mawuli Mensah has told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview that his time at Spanish side Real Zaragoza has come to an end, with the 22-year-old now looking forward to joining a new club in the coming weeks.

The midfielder spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan from Real Betis after joining Zaragoza in January on a six-month deal that included an option for a permanent two-year contract.

However, the agreement was dependent on Zaragoza maintaining their place in Spain’s second division, meaning the clause was not activated.

Mensah made 13 appearances during his spell and believes the move came at the right stage of his career after struggling for regular first-team opportunities at Betis.

“I felt like it was time to take a step. Zaragoza were playing in LaLiga 2, which is a top league. I realised I wasn’t getting enough minutes with the first team because I was alternating between the first team and the second team at Betis,” he exclusively told Footy-Africa.

The midfielder confirmed that he has now decided to move on after the loan expired and is already close to securing his next club.

“Me and Zaragoza are done. It was an option for two years, but I decided to move on. I’m looking forward to joining another team and, hopefully, in a week or two, a new club will be announced.”

Mensah is now expected to complete a transfer before the start of the new season as he continues his career in European football.
