Gambian youngster Saibo Saidy spoke exclusively to Footy-Africa after having officially completed a permanent transfer to Slovak top-flight club FK Železiarne Podbrezová from Finnish side Mikkelin Palloilijat.
The young defender expressed his delight and reaffirmed his ambition of one day playing in Spain.
“I am very happy. I made this promise that I wouldn’t stay any longer in Sweden and that I would take the next step. Now it is time to go again because my dream is to play in La Liga in Spain.”
The 19-year-old left-back joins the Slovak club after an impressive spell in Finland, where he quickly established himself as one of the standout young performers during the opening half of the 2026 league season.
After signing for Mikkelin Palloilijat from Swedish club Vasalund last winter, Saidy enjoyed a remarkable run of form, scoring four goals in just 10 league appearances despite operating primarily as a defender. His attacking contributions and consistent displays attracted the attention of clubs beyond Finland, with Podbrezová moving swiftly to secure his signature.
From farming fields to Swedish football: Saibo Saidy’s inspiring journey to Vasalund IF
Saidy’s journey in Europe began in October 2025 when he left Gambian side Bombada Football Club to join Vasalund in Sweden. Less than a year later, his continued development has earned him another move, this time to the Slovak First Football League.
The move to Podbrezová provides Saidy with an opportunity to continue his development in a highly competitive European league while taking another step towards achieving his long-term ambitions.
Known for his pace, attacking instincts and ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch, the Gambian is expected to strengthen Podbrezová’s options on the left flank ahead of the new season.
