Uganda Cranes defender Timothy Awany is edging closer to securing a new club in Europe following his departure from Israeli side Ashdod FC, Footy-Africa understands.
Awany recently announced his exit from Ashdod after bringing an end to a memorable seven-year spell with the club. The experienced centre-back leaves as a free agent after the expiry of his contract, with Ashdod also suffering relegation from the Israeli Premier League at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.
Having joined the club from KCCA FC in 2019, Awany established himself as one of Ashdod’s most dependable players, becoming the first foreign footballer in the club’s history to make 100 appearances.
Over the course of his stay, the Uganda international featured in 190 matches across all competitions, registering one goal and one assist while earning admiration for his consistency and leadership qualities.
Despite his availability on the transfer market, a return to the Uganda Premier League is not under consideration.
A source at Awany’s representatives, OBZ Agency, revealed to Footy-Africa that discussions with several clubs are ongoing and that the defender is expected to remain in Europe.
“Timothy has done exceptionally well during his time in Israel, and there is significant interest in his services,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.
“We are currently evaluating a number of options and we expect him to have a new club soon. What I can confirm is that there is no chance of him returning to the Uganda Premier League at this stage of his career.”
The source added that Awany still has the ambition and quality to compete at a high level in Europe and that the next move will be carefully selected to ensure he continues playing at a competitive standard.
At 29 years old, the former KCCA FC captain remains one of Uganda’s most accomplished defenders abroad and will be hoping to quickly settle at a new club as he continues to play a key role for the Uganda Cranes ahead of upcoming international assignments.
