Nigeria delivered a statement performance at the Fez Stadium, securing a 3-1 victory over Uganda to book their place in the Round of 16 as they chase another African crown. Paul Onuachu opened the scoring before Raphael Onyedika‘s impressive brace sealed the win, though Uganda managed a consolation goal late in the contest.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle made sweeping changes to his starting lineup, with only Calvin Bassey and Victor Osimhen retained from the side that edged Tunisia 3-2 in the previous match. The tactical overhaul paid dividends as Nigeria controlled proceedings from start to finish.

Footy-africa’s resident Eagles expert Andrew Randa teamed up with former FIFA U-17 World Cup winner Sambo Choji to analyze the standout performers and those who struggled during the encounter.

Top Three Performers

Raphael Onyedika – 9.5

The Club Brugge midfielder seized his rare starting opportunity with both hands, delivering a masterclass in the middle of the park. Raphael Onyedika screened the defense expertly and provided crucial protection during the opening 45 minutes.

His attacking instincts proved equally valuable, as he netted two sublime goals that showcased his impeccable technique. The 23-year-old’s performance has given coach Chelle a selection headache he’ll gladly embrace heading into the knockout stages.

Paul Onuachu – 8.5

Despite squandering a golden opportunity early on, the towering striker more than made amends with his goal. Paul Onuachu’s hold-up play was exceptional throughout, consistently finding the right pass whenever the Eagles looked to relieve pressure.

While he could have added a second goal to his tally, his overall contribution makes a compelling case for a starting berth in the Round of 16.

Samuel Chukwueze – 8.5

Operating primarily as a number 10, the AC Milan winger registered two assists in a creative masterclass. His perfectly weighted first-time pass released Onyedika for the opening goal, while his second assist came in a congested penalty area.

When Samuel Chukwueze plays instinctively without overthinking, he becomes a truly dangerous proposition for any defense.

Lowest Rated Performers

Francis Uzoho – 6.0

The goalkeeper conceded from the first shot on target he faced, though he bore no responsibility for the goal.

However, Francis Uzoho displayed nervousness on several occasions when called into action, perhaps reinforcing concerns that Nigeria’s goalkeeping position remains unsettled.

AFCON 2025: Nigeria soar as Uganda bow out after agonizing defeat

Chidozie Awaziem – 6.5

Introduced at halftime for Calvin Bassey, the defender was culpable for Uganda’s goal. Despite urging teammates to push up, Chidozie Awaziem played Roger Mato onside and ball-watched as Okello’s pass arrived.

He also collected a yellow card for a clumsy challenge late in the match, enduring an afternoon he’ll want to forget.

Ryan Alebiosu – 6.5

The debutant produced an inconsistent display despite showing promising glimpses.

After attempting several decent crosses in the first half, Ryan Alebiosu retreated into his shell after the break, failing to strengthen his case for regular selection.
