The 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered memorable moments for African football, with Egypt reaching the Round of 16 and Morocco progressing to the quarter-finals. However, while several players enhanced their reputations, others endured tournaments to forget.

Whether through costly mistakes, lack of attacking output or failing to reproduce their club form on the biggest stage, these are the Footy-Africa five high-profile African stars who fell short of expectations.

  • 3. Omar Marmoush (Egypt)
  • 2. Antoine Semenyo (Ghana)
  • 1. Nicolas Jackson (Senegal)

5. Luca Zidane (Algeria)

Luca Zidane arrived at the World Cup as Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper following his international switch from France. With the Desert Foxes tipped to make a deep run, the 28-year-old was expected to provide the assurance between the posts.

Instead, Zidane struggled throughout Algeria’s campaign.

He conceded six goals during the tournament and made just eight saves. His most difficult outing came in Algeria’s 3-0 defeat by Argentina on 16 June, when two costly errors directly led to goals scored by Lionel Messi.

Algeria’s hopes ended in the Round of 32, with Zidane unable to deliver the commanding performances expected of a goalkeeper entrusted with leading a talented side.

4. Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal)

Few African defenders carried greater expectations than Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly.

Despite arriving at the tournament with a thigh injury, the experienced centre-back remained the cornerstone of Senegal’s defence as the Lions of Teranga targeted another deep World Cup run.

Instead, Senegal exited in the Round of 32 after a dramatic 3-2 defeat by Belgium.

Koulibaly featured in two matches, playing 162 minutes as Senegal conceded six goals while he was on the pitch. He managed just one successful tackle and eight clearances before being substituted after 72 minutes against Belgium.

Following the defeat, the veteran defender admitted that his own mistakes had played a significant role in the result, underlining a disappointing tournament for one of Africa’s most reliable defenders.

3. Omar Marmoush (Egypt)

Fresh from an outstanding club campaign with Manchester City, Omar Marmoush travelled to North America as one of Africa’s most in-form attacking players.

Egypt enjoyed one of their best-ever World Cup performances by reaching the Round of 16 before narrowly losing 3-2 to Argentina, but Marmoush failed to replicate the clinical finishing that had defined his domestic season.

The forward appeared in all five of Egypt’s matches, playing a central attacking role throughout the tournament.

However, he finished with no goals and no assists, a poor return for a player expected to shoulder much of Egypt’s attacking burden alongside Mohamed Salah.

2. Antoine Semenyo (Ghana)

Antoine Semenyo entered the World Cup on the back of an impressive domestic campaign and was widely regarded as Ghana’s biggest attacking threat.

Expectations were high that the powerful forward would inspire the Black Stars in front of goal.

Instead, Ghana struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with their defensive approach limiting Semenyo’s influence in the final third.

He featured in all four of Ghana’s matches but finished the tournament without a goal or an assist, a disappointing return for one of the continent’s most exciting attackers.

1. Nicolas Jackson (Senegal)

Nicolas Jackson was expected to provide the cutting edge for Senegal after another encouraging club season.

Operating as Senegal’s leading centre-forward, the striker made four appearances and played 234 minutes during the tournament.

However, Jackson scored no goals and registered just one assist. He attempted only five shots across four matches, highlighting Senegal’s struggles in attack as they suffered a Round of 32 exit. He was overshadowed by Ismail Sarr all through the tournament.

With the Lions of Teranga hoping Jackson would emerge as their match-winner, his inability to convert chances ultimately summed up a frustrating tournament for both player and country.
