Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has revealed that his decision to represent the Black Stars was one of the easiest choices of his career, crediting his parents for allowing him to make the call without any external pressure despite growing up in England.
The forward, who was born and raised in England to Ghanaian parents, explained that international allegiance was never a source of debate within his family. Although many expected him to pursue an England career, Ghana’s approach immediately resonated with him.
Speaking in a video shared by Joy Sports, Semenyo said: “My mum and dad, they never really mentioned anything about England. Obviously living in England, you get a conversation, ‘Oh, you should represent England’, but it was never a conversation I’ve ever had really. Ghana came when I was 19 or 20, so I was never going to turn it down.”

The 26-year-old noted that pulling on the Ghana jersey carries immense personal significance, describing the experience as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition. He also praised the unwavering backing of his family, who continue to support him throughout his international journey.
“It means a lot, just cheering on Ghana and they’re cheering me on. It’s great support, and I just love every memory. It’s a dream come true to be honest,” he added.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, Semenyo believes Ghana possess the quality required to challenge some of the world’s top football nations. The Bournemouth attacker pointed to the growing depth within the squad, insisting the current generation has the potential to achieve something special on the global stage.
“There is a lot of talent in previous Ghana sides, but I feel like now it’s coming in abundance. There are so many positions that we’ve got covered. I feel that when we do come together, such a special group with endless talent, and I feel we can shock a lot of nations. We just need to prove to the world that we can be up there and compete with everyone else.”

Ghana head into the tournament carrying renewed optimism after assembling a squad packed with youth and experience. Drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, the Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17.
For Semenyo, however, the journey to this stage began years ago when he embraced the opportunity to represent the nation of his heritage. Now, with football’s biggest tournament on the horizon, he is determined to repay that faith and help Ghana make a lasting impression on the world stage.
