Career

Ally Samatta’s career is one of the most remarkable journeys ever achieved by a Tanzanian footballer, taking him from domestic football in Dar es Salaam to the biggest stages in Europe.

    • Simba SC & TP Mazembe Rise (2010–2016): After making his breakthrough with Tanzanian giants Simba SC, Samatta joined Congolese powerhouse TP Mazembe. During his time there, he won multiple league titles and the CAF Champions League, becoming one of Africa’s most feared strikers. He was crowned CAF African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) in 2015 after an outstanding campaign.

    • European breakthrough at Genk (2016–2020): Samatta’s move to Belgian side KRC Genk transformed his career. He scored more than 70 goals for the club, won the Belgian Pro League title, and became the first Tanzanian player to score in the UEFA Champions League. His performances attracted interest from several Premier League clubs before Aston Villa secured his signature in January 2020.

    • Premier League and European journeyman (2020–2025): Samatta became the first Tanzanian footballer to play in the Premier League when he joined Aston Villa. Following spells with Fenerbahçe, Royal Antwerp, a return to Genk, PAOK, and Raków Częstochowa, he continued to demonstrate his experience and goalscoring instincts across several European leagues.

  • Le Havre (2025–Present): In 2025, the veteran striker signed for Le Havre in France’s Ligue 1. While no longer at his physical peak, he remains an important squad member whose experience and leadership continue to benefit both club and country.

Accolades & Highlights

Samatta enters the latter stages of his career as arguably the most accomplished player Tanzania has ever produced.

His achievements include winning the CAF Champions League, the Belgian Pro League title, and becoming the first Tanzanian footballer to play and score in elite European competitions. During his peak years at Genk, he established himself among the most prolific African forwards playing in Europe.

His move to Aston Villa in 2020 represented a historic moment for Tanzanian football, as he became the country’s first representative in the Premier League. That transfer inspired a new generation of players across East Africa and remains one of the most significant milestones in Tanzanian sporting history.

For Tanzania, Samatta remains the undisputed captain and symbol of the national team. He was recalled to lead the Taifa Stars at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and continues to be viewed as the player who elevated Tanzanian football onto the global stage.
